Even with all the technology we have today, the business card still endures. It serves as the mini-billboard ad representing your business well after you meet someone and go your separate ways. The right look and feel can often make or break your potential opportunity for business in the future.
Depending on how you specify your printing job, you can get some really great production value out of your project and save some serious money. Knowing how you will print the job up front can help you plan it out ahead of time during the design phase.
I’m sure everyone has come across some really unique business cards (and hopefully kept them) and often wondered how they”re produced. Well, I’m here to show you how just a few of the dozens of cards I’ve designed are specified and printed. I’ve got them in order of simple and inexpensive to the more intricate and costly. Here goes.

Specifications: One-color, two-sided using paper printing plates for extremely inexpensive printing, however only suitable for short runs as the plates wear out quickly. Paper stock is an 80# Strathmore.
Specifications: Two-color, two-sided using a PMS and black. Gray border is a screen of black. Paper stock is an 130# Neenah Classic Crest.
Specifications: Two-color, two-sided using a PMS and a black. The PMS choice looks like a metallic, however it is not. Paper stock is an 80# Neenah Classic Crest.
Specifications: Two-color over one-color, PMS color + black. Paper stock is an 80# French Butcher paper.
Specifications: Two-color over one-color, two-sided with two PMS + black. Cards were printed one-sided in advance for easy black plate reprints and new employees. Paper stock is an 80# Neenah Classic Crest.
Specifications: Three-color over one-color, two-sided. Paper stock is an 80# Neenah Classic Crest.
Specifications: One-color, one-sided with black only. Die-cut with a perforated fold on duplex stock (two different colored stocks laminated together). Paper stock is an 88# Neenah Classic Laid.
Specifications: Four-color over two-color, two-sided with all spot colors. Die-cut with a scored fold on uncoated stock. Paper stock is an 88# Neenah Classic Crest.
Specifications: Three-color over one-color + UV varnish both sides, two-sided. The purple PMS color was left off of the printed masters for reprints and new employees. Paper stock dull coated 80#.
Note: This is easily the most expensive business card I have ever designed. Initially, the cards were not specified with the UV varnish. However, since other pieces in the identity package were using it, the client loved the look and wanted the cards to be the same. Initially cost-effective and manageable, but not with the varnish. Cool look though.
Specifications: Two-color over two-color. Rounded corners with a satin varnish on dull stock. Paper stock is an 80# Neenah Classic Crest.
