Shell Natural Gas principles icon design

Here’s a new project just completed for Shell Natural Gas working with the creative folks at Edelman Digital | San Francisco. They were in need of a set of icons that represented their five operating principles, those being safety, air quality, habitat, ground water and good neighbors. These icons would appear as part of the globally-recognized Shell Petroleum branding, and help communicate Shell’s operations in the natural gas arena.

Here are some additional concepts that weren’t used. They include this particular ‘habitat’ icon concept where the client requested a squirrel and footprint in the design. Although I felt especially clever in coming up with this solution, everyone agreed that it may not communicate the right message – and it may just look – well, weird. It’s still cool, though. There are also some different shapes suggested for a more badge-like feel to the icons and a simple circle.

The color palette followed the Shell Brand Guidelines, but visually it was my style and direction that was used in the icon illustration work. In addition, the icons were used in an animation that appears on the Shell corporate site. I’ve provided some screen captures.

I want to thank the team at Edelman Digital | San Francisco for the project. It was a good group to work with for sure.
